Name of Show: “Weeds of Sloth” by Mark Bowen

When a girl suffering from memory loss begins seeing apparitions from the past, she confronts her overprotective older sister, who clearly knows more about the events leading up to her present condition than she’s willing to let on… and the result is a shocking revelation about a blocked out past which will reopen old wounds for both of them

1. Jennifer: (lead) 18-25 F

Girl suffering from a memory loss following a nervous breakdown. Struggling to re-discover her blocked out past, and why she is currently such a mess, wanting to drink, etc…

2. Sandra: (co-star) 25-35 F

Jennifer’s overprotective older sister, an M.D. Very smart, but also anti-social, cynical and stuck up. She is the “strong one”, a fiercely independent woman, but underneath her strong exterior there is a deep abiding hurt and a need for friendship that she’s managed to hide from all but her sister…

3. Johnny: (supporting) 18-25 M

Young, good looking soldier Jennifer had been engaged to, but has since been blocked out after his death. Appears in flashbacks and as a spirit, haunting her.

4. Deborah: (supporting) 45-65 F

Johnny’s mother. Grieving widow, and extremely sentimental in her bizarre (and arguably unhealthy) attachment to mementos left by her late husband…

5. Dave: (supporting) 20-40 M

Loser guy that waits tables at Jennifer’s favorite restaurant. Comic relief, both in how he pathetically hits on both sisters, and in comparing his desirability (not just his looks, but also his moronic behavior) to that of Johnny…

I envy not in any moods

The captive void of noble rage,

The linnet born within the cage,

That never knew the summer woods:

I envy not the beast that takes

His license in the field of time,

Unfetter’d by the sense of crime,

To whom a conscience never wakes;

Nor, what may count itself as blest,

The heart that never plighted troth

But stagnates in the weeds of sloth;

Nor any want-begotten rest.

I hold it true, whate’er befall;

I feel it, when I sorrow most;

‘Tis better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all.

In Memoriam, Canto 27
